Police said that a person on a bicycle approached a victim on the 3200 block of Kensington Street, hit them on the hand with a gun, and then stole their phone before fleeing.
The victim chased the robber and police followed them, according to the department.
The officers stopped their squad car on the 900 block of East Westmoreland Street to approach the suspect on foot, authorities said.
"At this point, the male wanted for the robbery discharged his weapon twice at Officer #1, who was positioned in the driver's seat of the police vehicle," reads the statement from PPD.
"Officer #1 returned fire, striking the suspect in the left ankle."
The suspect fell down, dropped the gun, and was arrested, authorities said. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition, they added.
Neither the person shot nor the officer who shot him were named by police. The department said the shooting officer has been placed on "administrative duty" pending the outcome of Internal Affairs and Officer-Involved Shooting investigations.
